Mahalakshmi Puja: Understanding the Symbolism of Goddess Lakshmi

On the day of Diwali worshipped Goddess Mahalakshmi. It is considered the most auspicious day during Diwali. She represents wealth, prosperity, and happiness. That’s why devotees worshipped Goddess Mahalakshmi to take blessings for wealth and prosperity.

Mahalakshmi Puja Vidhi, Tradition, and Rituals

Lakshmi Puja is the most important ritual performed on Diwali. In which some popular rituals during Lakshmi Puja are : 

  • On this day firstly clean the house and surrounding.  
  • Decorated the house with rangoli, flowers, lights, and lamps.  
  • Wearing new clothes during Lakshmi Puja and some people also observe fast on this day.  
  • Then decorate the idols of Goddess Lakshmi using flowers and red cloth.  
  • Worshipped the Goddess by Chanting the Lakshmi Puja mantra and lighting a lamp.  
  • Some people do prayers and different Lakshmi Puja Vidhi at home for a successful career, business, health, and other things. At the end, people sing Lakshmi Puja arti.  
  • It advised to avoid the worship of Goddess Tulshi on this day.  

Mahalakshmi Puja mantra

Lakshmi Puja mantra has many benefits which attract prosperity and good health. The main Lakshmi Puja mantra was : 

Lakshmi Beej Mantra

||Om Shring Shirye Namah|| 

 Means:  I meditate upon the great Goddess, the wife of Lord Vishnu to bless me with higher intellect and bestow upon me riches and opulence in abundance.  

Maha Lakshmi Mantra 

 || Om  Sarvabaadhaa Vinirmukto, Dhan Dhaayanh Sutaanvitah | 

Manushyo Matprasaaden Bhavishyati Na Sanshayah Om || 

Means: I pray to Goddess Lakshmi to destroy all the evil forces around us and bless us with a prosperous and bright future.  

Gajalalakshmi Mantra

|| Om shreem Hreem Kleem Gajalakshmaye Namah || 

Means: I worshipped the one who is praying by the elephants. Elephants are seen as a symbol of immense wealth and prosperity. The Gajalakshmi in the position which elephants who bring wealth worship her and she bestows the same wealth unto her worshippers.  

Lakshmi Puja Samagri 

Lakshmi Puja is done with proper rituals and Lakshmi Puja Samagri. A basic item required in Lakshmi Puja is Flowers, fruit, Ghee, Curd, Mustard oil, Turmeric, Vermillion or Sindoor, Mirror, Saree, Yellow thread, Incense stick, Sesame seed and rice powder.  

Mahalakshmi Puja History and Origin

According to the beliefs Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the Samundra Manthan during the war between Gods and Demons. After the emersion Goddess Lakshmi chose Lord Vishnu as her master and thus came on the side of God. After that God had their power back, which was easier to defeat the demons.  

From on that day, Goddess Lakshmi visited all of the homes of her devotees, if she is pleased with them on the day of Diwali. Diwali is also the festival of light and happiness which is similar to the Lakshmi Puja festival. Goddess Lakshmi blessed her devotees with a prosperous and healthier life.  

Significance of Lakshmi Puja

Lakshmi Puja is performed to bring a new year as per the Hindu calendar. During the Lakshmi Puja rituals, the main door is kept open as a symbol of inviting the Goddess into the home. Rangoli made of flowers and colours are used for the decoration of the houses. New ventures and new accounting years in some businesses are also initiated on this day.  

Celebration of Lakshmi Puja 

People celebrate Lakshmi Puja by worshipping the Goddess with all the rituals seeking a prosperous and healthy life. Some places to observe Lakshmi Puja are : 

Ashtalakshmi Temple, Chennai

This temple is situated near Eliots Beach Chennai, it has the shrine of all the eight incarnations of the Goddess. The temple’s main deities are Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu. The shrine has the Goddess of prosperity, wealth, success, knowledge, and bravery.  

Sripuram Golden TempleTemple, Vellore  

The Sripuram Temple in Vellore is one of the biggest temples in India and it took seven years to build this temple. It has the Shri Chakra which means a star-shaped path with a wheel. It has the Shrine of the Goddess Lakshmi and a temple tower coated with gold foil.  

Lakshmi Narayan  Temple ( Birla Temple) New Delhi 

The Lakshmi Narayan temple in Delhi is a most important site of worshipping for Hindu. This temple was built in 1939 by B R Birla and Vijay Tayagi. This temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. The complex has idols of Maa Durga, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Hanuman, along with a Buddhist temple on the premises. The Lakshmi Puja arti was very famous in this temple.

Lakshmi puja is the most important ritual in the festival of Diwali, which brings prosperity, health, and success. Maa Lakshmi brings joy to you and your love one. Also, she blessed to empowered you with her blessings of name, fame, glory, health, wealth, happiness, kindness, and strength.
