On the seventh day of Navratri worshipped Goddess Kalratri. She is the first reference in the Devi Mahatmya. She is one of the fearsome form of the Goddess. She is also known for the Goddess of Auspiciousness and Courage.  

Goddess Kalratri Mantra and Puja Vidhi

The form of Goddess Kalratri is the one of most violent amongst all forms. It is believed that Parvati removed her golden skin to slay the demons Shumbha and Nishumbha came to know as Goddess Kalratri.  

On seventh night of Navratri begins with worship of Kalarati which is perform by using sacred puja items. The devotees uses a shallow pan like utensile which is made of clay as base, three layer of mud and Sapta Dhanya/Navadhanya seeds are poured into mud and sprikle little water on it so that the seed get moisture. A Kalsha filled with Ganga jal , suparie, some coins and Akshat and Dhruva grass is placed in the base and then put five mango leave arround the neck of Kalsha which is then covered by coconut.  

Maa Kalratri Puja Dates:

Maa Kaalratri Puja will take place on October 9, 2024, during the Navratri festival. This day is dedicated to Maa Kaalratri, who is revered as a fierce and protective form of Goddess Durga. She symbolizes the destruction of evil and darkness, representing the power to eliminate ignorance and negativity. The Navratri color for this day is Royal Blue, symbolizing peace and serenity. Devotees celebrate by performing rituals, chanting prayers, and offering their respects to seek blessings for protection and strength.

Mantra of Maa Kalratri

ॐ देवी कालरात्र्यै नमः॥

Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah॥

Prarthana of Maa Kalratri

एकवेणी जपाकर्णपूरा नग्ना खरास्थिता।
लम्बोष्ठी कर्णिकाकर्णी तैलाभ्यक्त शरीरिणी॥
वामपादोल्लसल्लोह लताकण्टकभूषणा।
वर्धन मूर्धध्वजा कृष्णा कालरात्रिर्भयङ्करी॥

Ekaveni Japakarnapura Nagna Kharasthita।
Lamboshthi Karnikakarni Tailabhyakta Sharirini॥
Vamapadollasalloha Latakantakabhushana।
Vardhana Murdhadhwaja Krishna Kalaratrirbhayankari॥

Stotra of Maa Kalratri

हीं कालरात्रि श्रीं कराली च क्लीं कल्याणी कलावती।
कालमाता कलिदर्पध्नी कमदीश कुपान्विता॥
कामबीजजपान्दा कमबीजस्वरूपिणी।
कुमतिघ्नी कुलीनर्तिनाशिनी कुल कामिनी॥
क्लीं ह्रीं श्रीं मन्त्र्वर्णेन कालकण्टकघातिनी।
कृपामयी कृपाधारा कृपापारा कृपागमा॥

Kalamata Kalidarpadhni Kamadisha Kupanvita॥
Kamabijajapanda Kamabijaswarupini।
Kumatighni Kulinartinashini Kula Kamini॥

Navratri Day 7: Goddess Kalratri story 

Maa Kaalratri According to the Hindu Scriptures Kalarati form of Maa Durga killed the demons name Shumbh Nishumbh. They both once tried to invade the abode of the gods and wanted to attack them. Indra went to Lord Shiva to help then all the Gods and Deities prayed to Goddess Parvati who went to take bath near Mansarovar Lake. Maa Parvati mediated there and called her another form Chandi or Ambika and asked her to go into the battlefield to killed the demon. The assistant of Shumbh Nishumbha is Chand Munda came there to attack on deities. Goddess Chandi who was in her kaali roop attacked them and both of them. Then all the Deities praised Maa Chandi by saying ‘Jai Maa Ambika’ and gave her name Chamunda, the one who is the killer of Chand Munda, Raktabeej had the boon that if a drop of his blood spill on the ground, it will create another clone of Raktabeej equally strong as he was.  

It was difficult for Kaalratri Maa to kill him as many clones of Raktabeej emerged from his blood drop then Maa started drinking his blood to prevent it from dropping on the ground and then she appeared in gignatic form and swallowed all the clones and finally she was able to kill the demon Raktabeej.  

After that, Shumbh Nishumbh also came there to fight with Chamunda Maa. Maa Kali come in aggressive roop and started killing fearlessly whoever came in her way and killed both of them Shumbh Nishumbh. But Maa kali didn’t stop as she was in her fiercest form and after killing all demons she didn’t come back in original form. Then all the deities pray and requested to Lord Shiva to clam her otherwise she destroyed the whole universe.  

Then Lord Shiva tried to stop her but didn’t listen to him, then Lord Shiva lay down in front of her when she was in angry form that she even stepped on his beloved husband Lord Shiva. And then She suddenly come in original form and she felt embarrassed and her own tongue. She asks for forgiveness.  

Mythology of Goddess Kalratri 

Maa Kaalratri has the darkest complexion just like dark night, open hair, wearing a garland of Narmund, and rides on a donkey. Goddess Kaalratri is depicted as she has a heavenly-shaped structure, four hands, she is holding a clever, and torch in her left hand, and her right hand is in mudras of giving and protecting. The Goddess has three eyes on her forehead. She is full of energy and power. Flame appears from the nostril when she exhale and inhales. She is very dangerous form of Maa Durga but she works against only the demon. The devotees who worshiped Goddess Kaalratri blessed them with desired wish.  

Significance of Goddess Kaalratri

Maa Kaalratri is the most fiercest manifestation of Goddess Durga. This form of Durga is believed to be destroyed by demons, evil spirits, and negative power from everywhere. Kaal Ratri – the one who is kaal (death) and Ratri – night which means the one who works as Kaal against darkness and all negative power because she removes all the darkness of birth which helps to attain salvation.  

Conclusion 

On the seventh day worshiped Goddess Kaalratri devotees blessed with good energy and power. She removes all the negative energy from your life. She is one of the most dangerous and angry form Maa Durga. By worshiped a goddess, one can relieved by all kinds of diseases. Goddess Kaalratri can remove all fear from the life of devotees.
